ISSUES:
The legal implications of drug and alcohol problems in the workplace have been the subject of much arbitral and judicial attention in recent years, and many Canadian employers have sought to introduce programs to recognize and remedy substance abuse problems, and to reduce the risk of impairment on the job. However, there has been less attention to the scientific and medical issues that underlie our understanding of both addiction and impairment, including questions about the nature of addiction and its diagnosis and treatment, as well as the evolving technology around drug-testing. This program will feature two experts on drugs and drug use – one a bio-chemist with extensive knowledge and experience in the science of drug-testing, and the other a doctor who has helped design and implement workplace programs on substance abuse. Don't miss this chance to gain a better understanding of the facts which relate to this growing area of workplace concern. Questions to be addressed by the speakers include:
- What do we know about the effects of drugs and alcohol on performance? How do we define impairment?
- What defines addiction? At what point does addiction constitute a disability?
- What options are available to treat drug and alcohol addiction? Which are best suited for addicts trying to maintain employment? What supports should form part of a program to deal with workplace substance abuse problems?
- To what extent is relapse a feature of drug and alcohol addiction?
- What can drug and alcohol tests tell us? In particular, what can they tell us about impairment and/or the ability to perform particular tasks?
- What is the difference between the available tests for drugs and alcohol, and what are their strengths and weaknesses?
- When and how should drug-testing form part of a workplace policy on drug and alcohol use?
