ISSUES:

On June 30, 2008, Bill 107, An Act to Amend the Human Rights Code, comes into full effect in Ontario, with significant implications for employers, unions and complainants. This timely audio session will explore the impact of abolishing the investigation and screening function of the Commission and allowing complainants direct access to the Human Rights Tribunal, and will examine the new procedures, including the Tribunal's practices and rules. Don't miss this opportunity to master the new system, including:

  • What are the new requirements and timelines for applications and responses? What other new rules should workplace parties be aware of?
  • How will the mediation process work?
  • What is the role of the Legal Support Centre, and what implications will representation through this centre have for complainants and respondents?
  • How will the new system deal with the possibility of multiple proceedings (before the Tribunal, arbitrators and the courts) arising from a single case?
  • What new remedial powers will the Tribunal exercise?
  • What role will the Commission continue to exercise?
  • What will happen to existing applications when the amendments come into effect? What rules will apply to these complaints?
  • Will this new system work? Has it worked in B.C.?

Q & A: Gather your colleagues around a speakerphone in your own office or boardroom. Have the opportunity to ask questions in the Question & Answer portions of the sessions. An additional 15 minutes will be added at the end of the session for those who wish to continue with Q & A.
