Steven Barrett is the managing partner in the law firm Sack Goldblatt Mitchell where he represents unions. His practice includes public interest litigation under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and in the area of health and trade policy (including numerous appeals before the Supreme Court of Canada); advocacy before labour and other administrative tribunals and before the courts on judicial review applications and appeals; collective bargaining negotiation and interest arbitration, primarily in the health and broader public sector; and advocating on behalf of various unions and professional associations with respect to government legislative and policy initiatives. Some of Steven's cases include Lavigne v. OPSEU (constitution does not preclude unions using dues for political purposes); Andrews v. Law Society of B.C. (the first major equality rights case under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms); Rizzo & Rizzo Shoes Ltd. (employees entitled to termination and severance pay on employer's bankruptcy); CUPE & SEIU v. Minister of Labour (government interference in the independence of boards of interest arbitration); UFCW, Local 1518 v. KMart (union leafleting protected as constitutional freedom of expression); Vriend v. Alberta (human rights protections for lesbian and gay employees in Alberta); Dunmore v. Ontario (Attorney General) (collective bargaining rights for agricultural workers); Health Services and Support - Facilities Subsector Bargaining Assn. v. British Columbia (collective bargaining protected by freedom of association guarantee). |
