HELENA BIRT


 

Helena Birt is the Transition Director for the Human Rights Legal Support Centre, where she leads the design and development of the new organization mandated to provide human rights legal and support services throughout Ontario. Ms. Birt is on secondment from Legal Aid Ontario where she was the Provincial Manager of Family Duty Counsel Services. She has expertise in program development and alternative delivery models in the provision of legal services. Ms. Birt has spoken frequently on the nascent Human Rights Legal Support Centre, on dealing with self-represented litigants and the role of duty counsel in Ontario Courts, and is co-author of the Duty Counsel Manual published by Legal Aid Ontario. Ms. Birt obtained her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario in 1983 and was called to the Bar in 1985.
