Joan Gordon has been a full-time labour arbitrator/mediator since 1996. She has arbitrated and mediated labour disputes in a wide variety of provincial and federal industries in both the public and private sectors. In addition to her private arbitration practice, Joan holds appointments as a part-time adjudicator with the Yukon Public Service Staff Relations Board and the Yukon Teachers’ Staff Relations Board. She is a panelist on a number of rosters of arbitrators including the Collective Agreement Arbitration Bureau of British Columbia, the ADR Institute of Canada as a Chartered Arbitrator, the federal Mediation and Conciliation Service under the Canada Labour Code, and the British Columbia International Commercial Arbitration Centre.
From 1992 to 1996, Joan was a Vice-Chair at the British Columbia Labour Relations Board. For the decade preceding that appointment, she was a partner at the Vancouver law firm of Rankin & Company where she practiced primarily labour and administrative law. Joan has undertaken signification mediation and dispute resolution training and is a regular instructor in educational seminars and workshops. She frequently publishes papers and lectures at conferences and seminars addressing current issues of relevance to parties involved in labour arbitrations and mediations. Joan is the President of the Arbitrators Association of British Colombia and is a past Director of the British Columbia Council of Administrative Tribunals. She was inducted into the National Academy of Arbitrators in October 2006, and is a member of numerous other professional associations including the British Columbia Industrial Relations Association.
