DOUGLAS PORTER

Douglas Porter is Managing Director and Deputy Chief Economist at BMO Capital Markets. He has analyzed and written about trends in the Canadian and global economies and financial markets for over twenty-five years. He is the co-author of BMO Capital Markets’ weekly Focus publication, and is a regular commentator on economic and financial trends in the media. He is particularly known for bringing to light what Statistics Canada said was its most serious error on record (relating to the consumer price index), and for highlighting the large price gaps for many consumer goods as between Canada and the United States.

Before joining BMO Capital Markets, Douglas held positions as economist and country risk analyst with other financial institutions in Canada, and also worked in the research department of the Bank of Canada. Douglas earned a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Western Ontario in 1984 and holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Toronto Association of Business Economists since 1996, and has been a member of the C.D. Howe Institute’s Monetary Policy Council since 2008.
